Flash Fiction – Fiction that is extremely brief, typically only a few hundred words or fewer in its entirety.
The window was open just enough to let in the cool night air. They slept undisturbed by the sound of crickets, a solemn barred owl. At 3:00 am she awoke to the woosh, woosh, woosh of cold air in her face as her husband loudly gasped, sleep apnea taking hold again. The c-pap mask had moved away from his nose. She waited to see if his breath would resume its normal rhythm before placing the hose back inside his nostrils, careful not to wake him.
There were moments late at night, when she lay awake listening to the drone of the machine: inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale and considered the possibility of peaceful silence. What if she dared to place the pillow on his face and firmly hold it down for just a few minutes?
Instead, she pulled the pillow over her own head and drifted off, aware that he was still breathing.
